Earth-tones

The theme for today is Earth-tones.  This little bird was endearing as it tried to look for food. I am not sure what kind of bird it is. Feel free to comment if you would like to take a guess at it.

Below is the pic with the leaves in the foreground in-focus. Let me know which one you like better.

  1. I think it is one of those long necked, cool looking birds that have great reflections!

  3. Wonderfully photographed / looks like a 'little blue heron', seriously they are approx 25 to 30 inches tall.

  4. Beautiful shot!.
Looks to me like some kind of heron as well but the ones we have are slightly different in colour.
What kind of tree is that?....Lovely texture.
I hope you don't mind this comment but I find the out of focus leaves on the right side a little distracting.
The reflection is spectacular.....I love it!

  5. Thanks everyone. Pcphotoblog, you must be right. I looked up images of 'little blue herons' many of them look just like this one. I knew it was a lot smaller than other blue herons and had not heard of the variety you mentioned until now.

  6. Wayne (the name of my father is also Wayne so it is a great name). I appreciate your constructive criticism. I have another photo with the leaves in focus (and the bird out of focus) and could put the two together so everything would be in focus. I had wondered whether a photo with everything in focus would be more distracting. So I'll try to put up the merged photo this week and see what one you like better. I do value your opinion.

  9. Please forgive my impertinence but I took the liberty of copying and cropping your lovely photo.
I think your HDR idea is splendid and I'd LOVE to see the result.
Here is my modest rendition of your photo.....but just my impression.

  10. Thank you Wayne. I do like what you have done with the shot. Please do not stop giving advice. Basically, photography is something I enjoy doing but I am basically self-taught. I am not close to anyone who is a professional photographer so that is one of the reasons I have joined the group. I would like to soak up all of the tips and advice I can get. Please keep it coming. I hope to do the HDR on Saturday so feel free to pop back.

  12. I love how you got the heron so sharp and the reflection is icing. The big buttress roots are a fabulous background for it.

  13. responding to your query about which view is liked better, the entire photo is fabulous and the shallower dof was not a thought for me when originally viewed. with your comparison shot the broader dof gives a bit of extra bang. both are beautiful.
